Field Epidemiology Training

The course used a combination of didactic lectures, exercises (including computer-based), case studies and group field exercises. The courses also emphasized skills that would enable participants to use epidemiolgic data and surveillance information to drive the public health decision-making process.

CAREC is currently initiating efforts to establish a Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) to provide a continuous supply of field-trained epidemiologists who are competent in the practical application of epidemiologic and research methods to a wide range of public health problems in their respective countries. As a result of this course, CAREC was able to develop links and exchange information with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the University of Maryland in the area of training public health officials.

These links will be useful when planning future training in the region. These workshops were targeted at persons with leadership potential in public health, such as Medical Officers of Health and National Epidemiologists. Twenty-one (21) participants from 18 CAREC member countries attended the three-week workshop in Applied Epidemiology.

This course was part of the continuing UMD/IHV AITRP/CAREC partnership for training key public health professionals to enhance capacity to combat the AIDS epidemic in the region.
