The Fogarty AIDS International Training Research Program (AITRP)

Long Term Training Programs

Scholars Program
Targets professor or senior investigator level faculty for advanced training. Recognizing the often over-committed schedule of senior leadership, the program involves flexible training/research opportunities of one through six months duration.

This training/research sabbatical allows selected senior investigators to come to the IHV to perform specific research in a targeted area, or to attend and observe state-of-the-art clinical activities related to medical or dental care of HIV-infected persons and preventive strategies including vaccine trials. The training may be implemented within a single block of time or may involve multiple, short-term training programs.

Junior Investigator Program
Targets junior investigators who may come to the IHV for a series of training opportunities in clinical practice or to obtain a graduate degree in clinical research, dental research, epidemiology, laboratory technology, or other areas determined necessary for in-county capacity enhancement.

The goal of this training is to upgrade the skills of promising young medical, dental or nursing leaders whose involvement in future research on HIV prevention including vaccine trials and laboratory research is vital.

Postdoctoral Program
Targets top Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral graduates to participate in specific research studies in fulfillment of postgraduate training. For Ph.D. or equivalent students, this will involve laboratory or behavioral/clinical research relevant to the HIV prevention goals of the IHV. For M.D.'s or D.D.S.'s, if clinical work and training is anticipated, acceptance into a training position is contingent upon meeting all requirements for postgraduate training. Clinical training is possible for those with site-specific patient care needs.

Pre-doctoral Program
Targets top undergraduate students with the goal of enrolling them in a Ph.D. or Master's level program in HIV-related disciplines in the graduate, dental or nursing schools of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Students must meet the academic requirements and should have documented evidence of academic excellence including a B.S., B.A., Masters degree or the equivalent with a commitment to the research objectives of the training program.
