Post-Doctoral Program

Mission

The IHV is a nonprofit research institute dedicated to research and training in virology. Research focuses on the role of viruses in human disease, particularly AIDS, cancer, and certain newly emerging diseases with viral etiology. The goal of the postdoctoral program is to support the development of independent investigators working at the interface of basic and clinical research.

Training

Postdoctoral training at the IHV aims to develop state-of-the-art technical skills, to develop skills in designing, presenting, and criticizing experimental research, and to provide strong guidelines for ethical professional behavior. The IHV is affiliated with the University of Maryland and with the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, which expands the facilities and collaborative opportunities available for training. The IHV sponsors seminar series, journal clubs, discussion groups, and formal didactic courses to impart training in general virology, vaccine design, molecular virology, clinical use of antiviral drugs, viral pathogenesis, use of viruses in gene therapy, rational responses to emerging pathogens, diagnostic techniques, and bioethics. The IHV Postdoctoral Training Program creates an optimal environment for individuals who wish to pursue a career in biomedical research.

Fellowships

Applications and Stipends: Postdoctoral fellows can apply for salary support by submitting a Postdoctoral Fellowship Application (10KB, 4 pgs.) PDF. This application will have a cover page listing 3 references, a biosketch, and a 3-page research proposal. The proposal should be developed with a Mentor chosen by the applicant. Fellowship stipends range from $35,000 to $56,000 per year for two years depending upon past experience, degrees, and productivity. A $2000 expense allowance is awarded to each fellow to cover the costs of journal subscriptions, books, and attendance of scientific meetings.

Eligibility and Criteria: Postdoctoral applicants must have relevant research experience, documented research productivity, and an advanced degree (an MD, PhD, DVM, DDS, Dsc, or certifiable equivalent). Applicants need not be US citizens. Candidates at the beginning stages of their research career will be favored. Fellowship applications will be scored on:
1) Quality of training experience provided by supervisor; i.e. potential for transforming the candidate into an independent investigator.
2) Scientific merit of proposed project.
3) Qualifications of the candidate as determined by publications and letters of recommendation.
4) Candidate's estimated potential for establishing a career in virology.

Fellowship applications will be reviewed by a panel of external reviewers as well as by some of the IHV faculty.
