|
Science Watch ranks Dr. Robert C. Gallo, founder and director of the Institute of Human Virology, No. 6 on its global list of most-cited researchers from 1983-2002. Science Watch's citation database includes publications submitted by more than 2.5 million scientists (unique authors) worldwide and published in Thomson ISI-indexed journals. The most-cited list includes three Nobel laureates, including David Baltimore, Caltech, ranked seventh; and Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein, University of Texas Health Science Center, ranked 35 and 36. |
Dr. Gallo is internationally renowned for his co-discovery of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. He has published more than 930 articles over the past two decades, resulting in at least 61,303 citations in scientific literature focusing on discoveries and scientific advances in cancer and viral research and, most notably, HIV/AIDS. After three decades at the National Institutes of Health and innumerable awards for his scientific contributions to the world, Dr. Gallo left NIH to establish the Institute of Human Virology, a new model that houses under a single roof experts in basic science, clinical care and global epidemiology in an effort to pool resources and more quickly move discoveries from laboratory to real-life patient. The IHV opened in 1996.
"The Institute is proud of Dr. Gallo for his scientific legacy and leadership in cancer and the global fight against AIDS," says Dave Wilkins, COO of the Institute based in Baltimore, Md. "One of the most enduring scientists of our time, Dr. Gallo is relentless in pushing the best and brightest in an endeavor to benefit the HIV/AIDS community worldwide."
The IHV has developed a vaccine candidate that, in the laboratory, has yielded promising results; launched a national pilot program that provides patients with HIV therapy and support using a unique combination of direct observation and on-site education; and has had a pioneering role in building HIV prevention and voluntary counseling programs in the heart of the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
HIV/AIDS is officially recognized as the deadliest pandemic in medical history.
