Dr. James B. Wyngaarden, former director of the National Institutes of Health (1982-1989) spent much of his distinguished career at Duke University, where he served as the Frederic M. Hanes Professor and Chairman, Department of Medicine, 1967-82.

He also served as the Associate Director for Life Sciences, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President, 1989-90; Foreign Secretary, U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 1990-1994; and was a member of the Washington Advisory Group, 1996-2002.

Acheivements and Awards:

  • Recipient of the Modern Medicine Award for Distinguished Achievement, 1974
  • Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1974
  • Won the North Carolina Governor's Award in Science, 1974
  • Appointed to the President's Committee for the National Medal of Science, 1977-80
  • won the Founder's Medal, Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, 1978
  • John Phillips Memorial Award, American College of Physicians, 1980
  • Became an honorary member of the Sociedad Medica de Santiago de Chile, 1981
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, 1984
  • Received the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Western Michigan University, 1984
  • Elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences of Sweden in 1987
  • U.S.-Israel Binational Foundation Board of Governors in 1987
  • French and American AIDS Foundation Board of Trustees in 1987
  • World AIDS Foundation Board of Directors, 1987
  • Was chairman of the Biotechnology Sciences Coordinating Committee, OSTP, 1988
  • Received the Kober Medal from the Association of American Physicians in 1991
