At the University College Dublin, Prof. William Walmsley Hall heads the Department of Medical Microbiology and was responsible for the funding and development of the Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (CRID), whose construction was completed in August 2003. The focus of the centre is research on diseases that have significant impact on developing countries, including HIV, HTLVs and Hepatitis C (HCV). Prof. Hall is a scientist whose research interests are in human retrovirology, specifically the Human T lymphotopic Viruses (HTLV). Prior to returning to Ireland in 1996, Prof. Hall spent his entire academe in the United States where he was Assistant and Associate Professor of Medicine at Cornell; Associate Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Medical Virology and Senior Physician at the Rockefeller University in New York. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases in the U.S. and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in the UK and the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. Prof. Hall obtained his Ph.D. from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland and M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in New York. Prof. Hall was President of the International Retrovirology Association from 2001-03 and has been elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Neurovirology, AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, Neuropathology, Journal of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (JAIDS). |
