Board of Advisors
Stewart Greenebaum has received many humanitarian awards and was named Philanthropist of the Year by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives. In 2004, he became the first non-scientist in the history of the Institute of Human Virology to be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant support of the IHV’s research, treatment and prevention efforts and his contributions to the global cause of helping to eradicate HIV/AIDS. A former chair of the IHV’s Board of Advisors, Greenebaum already has left a lasting legacy in his native Baltimore. He and his wife, Marlene, have founded charitable organizations with worldwide reach, made countless monetary contributions and devoted hours of services through leadership and volunteerism. The couple in 1996 made a $10 million gift to the University of Maryland Medical System/University of Maryland School of Medicine, the largest private contribution ever made to the school or hospital. The gift celebrated her five-year survival mark following a 1991 diagnosis of breast cancer, marking her successful recovery as well as the medical system’s growth and progress. Stewart is past Chairman of the Board of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), which also includes University Hospital, the State of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center and the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, and has been widely recognized as a dynamic leader of one of our country’s leading teaching hospitals. Greenebaum currently is one of five independent American directors of Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem and he and his wife, in cooperation with Congressman Elijah Cummings, have funded and are chairs of a program that sends African-American high school students to Israel. They also are founders of The Children’s House at John’s Hopkins, which provides lodging for families of children with life-threatening illnesses and where he also is Chairman of the Board. A lifelong Baltimore resident, Greenebaum is President of Greenebaum and Rose Associates, a privately-held, full-service, real estate development and management company with offices in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Founded in 1981, the firm has extensive experience in the full spectrum of development, from revitalizing historic downtown properties to new development in both urban and suburban markets. Greenebaum & Rose Associates has distinguished itself for its integrity and devotion to the environment. The firm selects its properties with impeccable prudence and builds to complement the natural surroundings. Trees are valuable assets, foliage is treasured and the land treated with reverence. Stewart assumes responsibility for all residential development of the company. He is responsible for the acquisition and development of more than 10,000 residential lots as well as office buildings and shopping centers in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The Greenebaums have two grown children who share with them a deep personal commitment to Baltimore and the State of Maryland and to the improvement of the human condition. |
