Dr. Gilliam is an active faculty member of the Institute contributing to both clinical care, teaching and clinical research. He currently provides both in-patient and out-patient clinical care to HIV infected individuals at the University of Maryland Medical System and Maryland General Hospital. He is also an instrumental investigator on several on-going clinical research trials being conducted at the IHV with a focus on therapeutic and preventive HIV vaccines. In 2002, he was granted one of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network's (HVTN) Clinical Scholars Award.

Previously, Dr. Gilliam investigated the role of HIV in male genital secretions, particularly the effect of antiretroviral agents on viral load in semen. He subsequently joined the Henry M. Jackson Foundation where he ran the U.S. based Phase 1 HIV vaccine trials for the U.S. Military HIV Research Program.
