Sue BaileySue Bailey
NBC News Analyst

Dr. Sue Bailey is a recognized expert in Public Health and Safety who is presently serving as a News Analyst for NBC. She has extensive experience in public health, academia, military medicine and regulatory and public policy administration. As a physician and senior administrative executive, she has been at the forefront of many significant challenges faced by our government including national security, environmental safety and public health issues.

Dr. Bailey was confirmed as the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) by the U.S. Senate in May 1998. Previously, she served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Clinical Services), from l994 to l995. She also served as a spokesperson for the President's Healthcare Reform Campaign in 1993. She has extensive experience in all facets of medical policy, planning, administration and healthcare delivery. Dr. Bailey is a board certified physician whose clinical and academic background includes a faculty position at Georgetown University Medical School.

As Assistant Secretary of Defense she was responsible for the protection of the health of US military forces including pre and post-deployment health, battlefield casualties, endemic disease and environmental hazards. During her tenure she traveled to warzones and locations of engagement including Guantanamo Bay, Haiti, The Persian Gulf, Bosnia and Kosova. Each conflict or region presented unique conditions affecting the health and safety of US troops. Under her direction medical and environmental teams were on the ground at the outset of a deployment to prevent or manage injuries and illness directly resulting from combat, endemic exposures or hazardous materials.

Her professional education includes a BS degree from the University of Maryland and a medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at George Washington University and completed a Medical Post Graduate Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.

Her Navy career began during medical school in the l970s, and included active duty assignments at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, MD and Philadelphia Naval Hospital. She achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander prior to her appointment at the Department of Defense.
