Institute of Human Virology Trains Visiting AIDS Experts From Around the Globe

(BALTIMORE, MD) – The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is hosting a
two-week course to train top physicians from around the world in the Institute's
innovative model of HIV/AIDS research and treatment.
The physicians, from China, Haiti, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda, will participate
in lectures and hands-on training at IHV in Baltimore. IHV is the only institute
of its kind that integrates basic and clinical research with treatment of HIV/AIDS.
The visiting physicians will spend time at each of IHV's clinical sites in
Baltimore where they will learn about IHV's unique treatment, education and
support programs for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The training will focus on topics including:
- opportunistic infections
- the treatment of patients who have not taken anti-HIV medications
- drug adherence, medication toxicity
- the special needs of female HIV patients
- pharmacy operations and laboratory practices appropriate for global implementation
The visiting physicians are leading research experts in their own countries
and together the group is responsible for treating tens of thousands of HIV
patients.
The physicians include:
- Dr. Lin Pang, chief of pediatrics and vice-chief doctor at Beijing Ditan
Hospital in China
- Dr. Tian Ming Jia, senior doctor of Pediatrics, at Zhengzhour University
in China
- Dr. Xiao Tang, president and chief physician at Guangzhou People's Hospital
and professor at the Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine in China
- Dr. Protas Ndayanga, a leading HIV physician from Tanzania
- Dr. Abdulateef Salisu, an HIV clinic manager from Nigeria
- Dr. Henry Seruyange, who oversees 16 clinical sites in Uganda and Dr. Georges
Perrin, who has developed HIV clinics in Haiti.
Primary funding sources for the program are the Clinton Foundation, founded
by former President Bill Clinton and the United States government through the
President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
The Chinese physicians were hand selected by the Chinese Center for Disease
Control (CDC), which signed a partnership agreement with IHV in 2005.
IHV is a center of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI)
and affiliated with the University
of Maryland School of Medicine.
